A New Type of Reading

I love to read different kinds of books. When I first started reading, I loved things that were funny. As I got older, I found a love of history stories, which is how I found the American Girl series. When I was about twelve, I started liking mystery books the best, especially Nancy Drew.

In the past two years, I have experimented with different types of genres. I started attending a monthly book club at my library for homeschooled high school students. Since I started reading the books assigned, I have found a new type of reading!

I never thought I'd like Science Fiction, but I actually do! It takes a lot more thinking and using imagination than some of the other books I have read,  but I do enjoy it. Plus, it is really popular right now, so new Science Fiction books are coming out all the time.

Another genre I have come to love is Fantasy and Fairy Tale. One of our assignments was to read a book under "Fantasy," and one under "Fairy Tale," and compare the books. We found that although they are very similar in setting and plotline, Fantasy focuses more on the action, and Fairy Tale focuses more on the character's relationship with other people. Our group decided we liked Fairy Tale better, but Fantasy is definitely a genera I would never rule out when choosing a new book to read.

I've also started reading some classics. I have been a fan of Louisa May Alcott for several years, and have read many of her books. With Alcott's stories, her characters were very relatable to me. Especially in Little Women. It was a very humorous book, because I could understand the four sister's personalities. I felt that I had some traits from each of the girls. Meg's girly-girl personality, Jo's love of writing, Beth's shyness and piano talent, and Amy's sometimes ungratefulness and love of nature.

Recently I have picked up books that I can't really relate to. I used to stay away from them because I didn't think I'd like them, but I come to find out that they are actually pretty good.

I just started reading the Great Gatsby. I have heard some good things about it, plus it was sitting on our bookshelf, so I decided to try it. I'm not far enough into it to say for sure if I like it, but if I do, I'll make sure to put it on my GoodReads.

Do you have a GoodReads account? If so, please friend me. I'd love to see what you're reading, and that way, you can follow me as I read some new types of books! I'm under Samantha Bartley.

One genera that I have been very interested in lately are ghost stories. Thanks to my friend Crystal. Ghost stories don't scare me, so I can read them and not think twice about it. I do like those stories that have some scary stuff in it that might make me jump. I would much rather read about horror than watch it on tv.

What types of books to do like to read?

Thanks!
~Sam

If your looking for a fairy tale retelling, try UnEnchanted by Chanda Hahn, if you like it, read the sequel, Fairest. After that you have to wait for the third book, Fable, to be released. Also, Gail Carson Levine and Shannon Hale have some good reads. And if you're looking for suspense and action (You can read Hahn, Levine, and Hale, there are some really good action parts) with spies or thieves, try Ally Carter. If you want a relaxed but exciting horse story, try the Canterwood Crest series by Jessica Burkhart. It is a huge series so you don't have to worry about running out of books to read. I guess that about wraps it up for this comment. If you read it, congrats! You've reached the end!

Haha I don't see how I helped at all but ok!
I love ghost stories and almost anything scary. (The scary movies lately aren't really scary to me. I like the really old ones where you never see anything coming)

If there's not some sort of mystery to it, I find it utterly boring because you can clearly see what's going to happen. I just like trying to solve things I guess :)
